Up in the air: Ray's status still uncertain

Hold everything. Michigan safety Marcus Ray might be back in two games - but then again, he might not. During the weekly Big Ten teleconference yesterday, Michigan coach Lloyd Carr said that "there seems to be some debate as to whether (Ray's suspension will) be five or six games."

X marks the spot for golfers' best nish yet - fth

The young Michigan men's golf team grew up a little bit this week. The Wolverines placed a season-best fifth out of 19 teams at the Xavier Invitational in Kings IsleMason, Ohio. The Wolverines shot an 877 on the Jack Nicklaus-designed course, just nine strokes behind tournament winner Eastern Michigan. Big Ten rival Indiana finished second with a score of 870, while hometown favorites Cincinnati and Xavier finished third and fourth with scores of 871 and 875, respectively.

Blast off! 'M' faces Rockets

The Michigan women's soccer team is hoping today's matchup with Toledo can serve as a launching pad to the remainder of the season. The Rockets enter today's 4 p.m. game at Michigan Soccer Field on the heels of a 6-1 beating that came courtesy of Wisconsin on Sunday. The Badgers troubled Michigan a month ago, giving the Wolverines their first loss of the season.

Following top two is key for McGuire's talented runners

There is little question who are the top two women's cross country runners at Michigan. Katie McGregor and Elizabeth Kampfe have been leaving other runners in their dust. McGregor has placed first in four meets while Kampfe has finished right behind her in all but one of those, where she placed third.

Cooper in a pickle

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - The leader of a migrant farm workers' union is upset with Ohio State coach John Cooper, who plans to endorse a pickle company that could be the target of a boycott. "We're very concerned about this," said Baldemar Velasquez, the founder of the Toledo-based Farm Labor Organizing Committee. "They will be hearing from us."

Park, teammates seize time off: Women's golf refining skills during three-week tournament layoff

The Michigan women's golf team has had plenty of time to ponder the fall season and prepare for its final tournament of the fall over the past few weeks. The Wolverines haven't participated in a competition since the weekend of Oct. 3 when they played at home in the Wolverine Invitational. They don't play again until Oct. 23, when they travel to Bonita Springs, Fla., for the Notre Dame Invitational.

Injuries decimate 'M' stable of forwards

The regular season may be only one game old, but it isn't evident by looking at the Michigan hockey team's injury list. The Wolverines, smarting from earlier injuries to forward Craig Murray and center Scott Matzka, suffered another blow yesterday in practice when center Andrew Merrick went down to the ice after being checked along the boards.
