The Michigan hockey team's two games against Niagara were decided by a matter of seconds - both on the clock and in chances in front of the Niagara net.
Two nights of wild, exciting hockey produced a better result for Yost Ice Arena fans than for the Wolverines, as Michigan split with the Purple Eagles.

EVANSTON - The only thing D'Wayne Bates couldn't do on Saturday was make the rain stop.
Bates gave Northwestern all kinds of options - even the option - but in the end, he ran out of tricks. And so did his team.

They ran up and down the first fairway of the Michigan Golf Course, pumping their knees, finishing short practice sprints with windbreakers of purple, red, green, maize and blue and black and gold flapping in the wind.
These were the competitors from schools such as Ohio State, Wake Forest, James Madison, Eastern Michigan and host Michigan. And the looks on their faces were those of winners - runners that wanted and expected to win.

EVANSTON - Well, I can't lie to you. I tried to get into Northwestern as a senior in high school.
Yeah, yeah, I apologize. I was rash, capricious. I thought it was the 'thing to do' since everybody in my suburban Chicago high school was doing it. And sure enough, I was denied, but about 10 or 11 of my socially-challenged classmates enrolled.

Two former Wolverines, Tony McGee and Rod Payne, have teamed up with Michigan alumnus Glen Steele on the Cincinnati Bengals.
McGee, who is the Bengals' starting tight end, was coached in Cincinnati by Gary Moeller when Moeller was the team's tigh Ë|R ËÖ t
ends coach. Moeller also was the Michigan coach when McGee led the Michigan team, along with Elvis Grbac and Tyrone Wheatley, to a
38-31 Rose Bowl victory in 1993. Payne, the captain in 1996 and a backup center, is enjoying not being the youngest Michigan grad on the
team, now with rookie Steele on the roster.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Michigan women's crew team placed fifth in the championship eight race and 10th in the championship four race at the prestigious Head of the Charles regatta Sunday.
Nearly half a million people crowded the banks of the Charles River to watch the 32nd annual competition which featured crews from around the world, including the U.S. national teams.

This whole Michigan men's soccer deal still bothers me. It always has. It came to mind again this weekend. I was in Chicago on Friday night, and the traffic was backed up for miles. Lakeshore Drive was swamped. All the expressways were the same way. Bumper to bumper. It seemed a little strange, because it was Friday night, after all, and more than a couple hours had passed since rush hour.
Michigan men's soccer will do great things - but when?
EVANSTON - Late in the fourth quarter, with Northwestern within striking distance, Michigan had the ball around midfield. It was third down and one yard to go and 3:41 left in the game. The Wildcats had just used their final time out and trailed by just six points.
Fargas goes far to help 'M' cut through the mud
Coaches say it all the time, but to be honest, nobody really believes them.
Lloyd Carr says it all the time, but it's usually dismissed by most who hear it.

15 times for a season total of 74 yards.
"I just wanted to go out there and do well," said Fargas, who seized the opportunity presented by an injury to Anthony Thomas. Thomas didn't travel with the team to Evanston.
Michigan punches out another muddy Big Ten victory
EVANSTON - As a legitimate threat to win the Biletnikoff Award as the nation's top receiver, everyone knew D'Wayne Bates could catch passes.
Not many people knew he could throw them.

CHAMPAIGN (AP) - Ron Dayne rushed for 190 yards and three touchdowns as No. 9 Wisconsin defeated Illinois 37-3 Saturday to remain unbeaten in the Big Ten.
It was Dayne's sixth straight 100-yard game this year, and the massive tailback proved nearly unstoppable for the Illini (1-3 Big Ten, 2-5 overall), often dragging two or three defenders.

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) - Chris Sailer made the most of a second chance Saturday, and No. 2 UCLA is still in the national title chase.
Sailer, who missed a 21-yard field goal on the final play of the fourth quarter, hit a 24-yarder in overtime to lift No. 2 UCLA to a wild 41-38 victory over No. 11 Oregon.

What did Niagara coach Blaise McDonald give to his players before this weekend's series with Michigan?
Well, it couldn't be the word, starting with a 'V', that rhymes with Niagara, right?
'M' hockey and Niagara both receive blessings
Michigan forward Mike Comrie has played three games in Ann Arbor, and he is already turning heads.
The freshman had two goals and two assists Friday and leads the Wolverines in early-season point totals with five.

EAST LANSING - Winning a game in the last minute against your hated in-state rival is a dream of many athletes. Tamra Geryk and the Michigan field hockey team fulfilled that dream yesterday.
Geryk scored with 26 seconds left in regulation to secure a 2-1 victory against Michigan State at Spartan Stadium.

Waking up Sunday morning, the Michigan women's tennis team wondered whether or not the Wolverine Fall Invitational could be finished at the new William Clay Ford Outdoor Tennis Courts in the midst of a rain storm.
Mother Nature forced the tournament inside yesterday after two days of outdoor action. Regardless, the team boasted both the winner, junior Danielle Lund, and runner-up, junior Brooke Hart.

Unlike some sports, there is no rain delay in cross country. When it starts to pour, the tarp isn't rolled out. Instead, the race goes on as planned.
So when the third-ranked Wolverines stepped to the line yesterday at the Wolverine Interregional, the weather took a back seat to the task at hand - tuning up for the Big Ten championships.

To say the No. 19 Michigan soccer team dominated in-state rival Michigan State could be the understatement of the year.
Michigan achieved near perfection on Friday by allowing just eight Michigan State shots and three corner kicks, thrashing the Spartans who were seeking their first win over the Wolverines since 1994.

The ultimate test is playing against the best. When the Michigan volleyball team did just that, it didn't fare very well.
Friday night, the Wolverines traveled to Penn State to take on the second-ranked Nittany Lions. It was a joyous occasion for Penn State as it swept Michigan. The Wolverines have lost five straight matches.
