Students gather to remember Cantor

Hundreds of students gathered on the Diag in a candlelight vigil last night to pay tribute to Courtney Cantor, who many remember as vibrant and compassionate. "The grieving process will continue. We hope this will bring some kind of closure - we just want to help," said Rackham student Kimberly Haynes, the hall director at Mary Markley Residence Hall. Cantor, an LSA first-year student, died Friday morning after falling from her sixth-floor window Markley window.

Fraternity suspended indefinitely

Phi Delta Theta fraternity national headquarters officials announced the indefinite suspension of its University of Michigan chapter yesterday following an investigation into the death of a Chi Omega sorority pledge who died after attending a party at the fraternity.

Israel suspends all non-security talks:
Attack on bus stop could end talks in Maryland

QUEENSTOWN, Md. (AP) - Israel suspended all negotiations with the Palestinians on issues other than security yesterday after a bloody attack at a busy Israeli bus stop threatened already lagging Mideast peace talks. A senior Palestinian official, Yasser Abed Rabbo, dismissed the Israeli move as "cheap blackmail."

Days of action set to begin

Despite midterms and assignments, hundreds of University students may put classroom commitments aside tomorrow and Thursday to participate in the nationwide 2 Days of Action in defense of Affirmative Action. The event, which will take place nationally at universities such as Yale University, Harvard University and Arizona State University, is supported locally by several organizations on campus including United for Affirmative Action and the Michigan Student Assembly.

Senate Assembly discusses budget strength, renovations

Chief Financial Officer Robert Kasdin discussed the strength and allocation priorities of the University budget at yesterday's meeting of the Senate Assembly, the faculty's governing body. "The finances of the University are quite healthy," Kasdin said. "We are in a strong financial position, but it would be foolish to suspend our diligence."

Peace Corps seeks recruits

Founded on the steps of the Michigan Union by President John F. Kennedy, the U.S. Peace Corps offers invaluable experiences to all its volunteers. Notes: Public Health Prof. emeritus dies at 96

Mabel Rugen, professor emeritus of Public Health and Education, died in her Ann Arbor home Oct. 15 at the age of 96. Rugen, a pioneer in public health and education, retired from the University in 1970 after 40 years of teaching.

Documents dig up dirt in suit against Clinton

WASHINGTON -Lawyers for President Clinton and Paula Corbin Jones return to court today to argue whether her sexual harassment lawsuit should be reinstated, and yesterday the federal court in Little Rock, Ark., began releasing hundreds of pages of sealed documents that show both sides attempting to make an issue of the sexual history of the other.

Nigerian pipeline blast kills hundreds

JESSE, Nigeria (AP) - The charred remains of victims still clutched the plastic cups, funnels and cans yesterday they intended to use to scoop gasoline from a punctured pipeline before it exploded in this southern Nigerian town. The bodies were among at least 500 killed when the fuel erupted into a ball of fire over the weekend, an inferno so intense that flames - some shooting 65 feet in the air - still flared yesterday as firefighters let the last of the gasoline burn away.

Government alleges illegal campaign by Microsoft

WASHINGTON (AP) - Government lawyers opened their landmark antitrust trial against Microsoft Corp. yesterday by accusing the software titan of a carefully crafted, no-holds barred campaign to illegally "crush" a rival company. The hard-core tactics alleged by the government included Microsoft using its money and influence as the maker of the hugely popular Windows operating system to intimidate computer makers and entice other companies to distribute Microsoft's own Internet software over that of Netscape Communications Corp.
