Optioned out: Michigan wanted last year to last just a little longer

NOTRE DAME - Fresh off his first college game, Justin Fargas emerged from the losing lockerroom beneath Notre Dame Stadium to an oncoming thunderous herd of Irish faithful.

Missed field goals, fumbled kicks disable Wolverines

NOTRE DAME - It's not a pretty list: Three missed field goals. Two kick returners running into each other. One field goal blocked. One fumbled kickoff return. Punt average of 31. One long snap that bounced to the punter. Yeah, it's ugly. But that's exactly how the Michigan special teams looked last Saturday - ugly.

Fit to be tied: McGwire's 61st homer passes Ruth, ties Maris

ST. LOUIS (AP) - No. 61 flew off Mark McGwire's bat yesterday, matching Roger Maris' home run record, and left just one question: How soon will it be his alone? History came quickly. McGwire launched Mike Morgan's pitch 430 feet to left field in the first inning, tying the hallowed mark that has stood for 37 years.

McFarland next coach for Blue Wrestling

Friday afternoon, Athletic director Tom Goss announced that assistant Wrestling coach Joe McFarland, The 1985 graduate of Michigan will take over for current coach Dale Bahr, now in his final year as head coach. McFarland had been identified as a leading candidate as early as July 13th and the official posting for the job stated that an internal candidate was preferred.

Victory put shine back into tarnished Dome

NOTRE DAME - At last, Bob Davie can sleep easy. He hasn't been able to, really, since taking over the head coaching position at Notre Dame a year ago. His Irish lost four of their first five games, which, to hear Notre Dame alumni tell it, was just (barely) this side of the end of the world. Then, the South Bend summer was one of the worst ever, as a pair of front-page lawsuits splattered the school's golden image with so much mud.

Brady shows poise in 'M' debut

NOTRE DAME - The swagger absent from the majority of the Michigan team in its 36-20 loss to Notre Dame on Saturday remains secure within the leader of the offense. From his initial entrance onto the field, Tom Brady led the Michigan charge.

Kovach and Tate head to Happy Valley

Over the past few years, Kelly Kovach and Kellyn Tate have been fixtures in the Michigan softball dugout. They watched the team develop into one of the top programs in the Big Ten and the country. And just last year, they participated in the Wolverines' two wins over Penn State. This year, they'll be trying to prevent a Michigan win over the Nittany Lions.

'M' stickers split games against top-10 opposition

No one can accuse the Michigan field hockey team of easing into the season. The 11th-ranked Wolverines, coming off their first-ever Big Ten championship last season, opened this one by splitting two matches at the inaugural Big Ten/ACC Challenge this weekend in St. Louis.

Point guard is first to commit for 1999-2000

After signing on to coach the Michigan basketball team through the year 2003, coach Brian Ellerbe set out to secure other future plans - those of his team. Less than two weeks after inking the long-term deal, Ellerbe received a commitment from Kevin Gaines, a blue-chip point guard from Las Vegas.

'M' volleyball sweeps into season

Last year the Michigan women's volleyball team had its most successful season in history, earning its first NCAA tournament bid and finishing with a record of 21-12. Entering the 1998 campaign, the Wolverines think they can keep the fire burning.

Beitel, 'M' soccer dismantle weekend foes

Keeping pace with the success of the '97 season, the No. 17 Michigan soccer team remained undefeated after opening the season with a pair of road games this weekend. Playing in Indianapolis on Sunday, Michigan (2-0) defeated Butler, 2-1.

Venus eclipses Pierce; Sampras also advances

NEW YORK (AP) - On a day when thunderstorms turned the U.S. Open into Wimbledon West for 2 1/4 hours, Pete Sampras had 18 aces and never lost his serve in a 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 victory yesterday over Marat Safin. Sampras moves into the quarterfinals of the tournament he has won four times with the victory.

Men's cross country ducks golf balls at Open

The No. 7 Michigan men's cross country team began its season by running in the unscored Michigan Open - an event so unofficial that the University Golf Course staff doesn't even stop golfers from playing during the race. Traditionally, the open serves as an opportunity for Michigan coach Ron Warhurst to select his seven-man traveling squad and gain an early-season measurement of the team's potential.

'M' harriers cruise to team, individual titles at Sycamore Pride

If any Michigan team looks prepared to make a run for a national championship, the women's cross country team seems to be a leading candidate. This past Saturday, senior Katie McGregor led the Wolverines to the Sycamore Pride title held at Indiana State. The Wolverines finished first with a team score of 19 points, 65 points better than runner-up Butler.

'M' gymnast makes U.S. team

He may be young. He may have been a rookie of sorts. But Michigan gymnast Justin Toman took it all in stride and left Indianapolis as a member of the U.S. national men's gymnastics team. Competing with Michigan teammates and former Olympians alike, Toman arrived at the 1998 John Hancock U.S. Gymnastics Championships Aug. 19 for his first trip to the tournament, which took place at Market Square Arena.

Coaches will play recruiting game, as well

When former Michigan basketball coach Steve Fisher was fired by athletic director Tom Goss last October, the Michigan basketball program went into a state of upheaval. The changing of the guard was completed this summer with the hiring of assistants Lorenzo Neely and Kurtis Townsend, and administrative associate Tom Sorboro. Michigan also signed coach Brian Ellerbe to a six-year contract.

Nebraska-Omaha to join CCHA in 1999

Melanie Gherardini will have to bust out her atlas. The travel coordinator for the Michigan athletic department has to find out how to get to Omaha. That's because Nebraska-Omaha was accepted as the 12th member of the CCHA a little more than two months ago, effective for the 1999-2000 season.

Kids, fans have good 'Experience' before watching loss at Crisler

At 11 o'clock on a hot Saturday morning, dozens of young kids ran through the gates and into the carnival-like atmosphere of the "Michigan Experience." These children scampered through the empty parking lot just east of the tunnel leading into Michigan Stadium. They bounced on a moonwalk and attached themselves to walls with Velcro body suits. There were even trees to provide shade for the parents.
