Goss spurns 'Niners to remain Michigan's athletic director

Tom Goss, it appears, is here to stay. Goss confirmed yesterday that he declined an offer to become the president of the National Football League's San Francisco 49ers, one of the most successful franchises in the league for the past two decades. Goss opted instead to remain Michigan's athletic director, a position he's held for just more than one year.

It's a bird, it's a plane ... it's Superfan!

Questions surround Saturday's football game between Michigan and Syracuse. Is Michigan done for the season? Can the Michigan defense stop scrambling quarterback Donovan McNabb? Will Drew Henson get to pick apart a prevent defense on a meaningless drive once again?

Class is out for field hockey freshmen

Although today is just the third day of classes for most Michigan freshmen, eight Wolverines have already been in school for more than a week. But these first-year students are not learning about chemistry and history; they are being taught lessons in field hockey.

Despite scheduling mistake, 'M' soccer still welcomes challengers

Throughout the summer, the Michigan athletic department has been printing up soccer schedules that include the Michigan Challenge Cup, which is supposed to be played tomorrow and Sunday. Well, the athletic department was wrong. There will be no cup to play for this weekend. The Michigan soccer team will play, though, and there will be plenty on the line. The Wolverines face Massachusetts tomorrow at 4 p.m. and Detroit on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Blue volleyball hosts familiar foes

The Michigan volleyball team is no stranger to tough competition at this time of year. In fact, coach Greg Giovanazzi purposely schedules difficult early-season opponents in order to get his team ready for the grueling conference season.

Harriers to face MAC attack in quad meet

Only once during the regular season will the Michigan women's cross country team fly to its weekend meet. And that's the way Michigan coach Mike McGuire likes it. Aside from the Sundodger Invitational on Sept. 26 in Seattle, the Wolverines never leave the Midwest - that way, McGuire can buy his team race experience without paying for it in terms of jet lag, sore legs and lackadaisical performances.

A game-by-game look at this week's non-Michigan Big Ten action ...

McNabb looks to limit Blue's defensive options

Weaving, bouncing and swaying are Donovan McNabb's fortes. He moves around the football field as easily as he dodges the Heisman hype that has plagued him since the preseason. But his ability to skirt tacklers in Syracuse's multi-faceted offense places him in a class by himself - as a man with unlimited options but serious burdens of leadership as well.

Williams, Sampras make semis

NEW YORK (AP) - Venus Williams needed a set to adjust to the wind and cold before turning on her power game. Pete Sampras needed no such warmup period, hitting his first serve of the match at 134 mph.

Rafter advances to semis after easy match

NEW YORK (AP) - Patrick Rafter was faster than the wind, and far too quick for Jonas Bjorkman, as he breezed into the semifinals of the U.S. Open. The third-seeded Rafter had 44 winners and only 14 unforced errors, and lost his serve just once in a 6-2, 6-3, 7-5 victory yesterday over No. 12 Bjorkman, who played in long sleeves on a chilly afternoon made even colder by a 24-mph wind.

Chasing home run records nothing new for Big Mac

LOS ANGELES (U-WIRE) - Before Mark McGwire chased Roger Maris and Babe Ruth, he chased Dave Hostettler and Kent Hadley. On Tuesday night, McGwire made history by breaking Maris' 37-year-old major-league home run record with his 62nd home run against the Chicago Cubs at Busch Stadium. But chasing a home run record was nothing new to McGwire, who went after the Southern California single-season home run record 15 years ago.
