As the University faces two admissions lawsuits, University President Lee Bollinger recommended Marvin Krislov as vice president and general counsel and Elizabeth Barry as associate vice president and deputy general counsel.

As vice president and general counsel, Krislov will take responsibility for the University's legal affairs, which include establishing legal strategies and goals.

He will also serve as senior legal counsel to the University Board of Regents and manage the University's outside relationships.

"I've been very interested in higher education's legal issues," Krislov said. "The opportunity struck me as particularily exciting."

Barry, who has served as interim co-general counsel for the past 18 months, said the role of deputy general counsel encompasses a wide range of jobs from litigation and managing other attorneys to giving advice and educating the University community on legal matters.

The general counsel's office will focus on the two lawsuits challenging the University's use of race in its admissions policies, Barry said.

"Obviously, the two cases are one of the major issues facing the University," Barry said. "I expect I will continue to be involved in them as well."

Kristov described the lawsuits as something he suspect he and the rest of the general counsel will be "very involved in."

Bollinger said the University will benefit with Barry continuing to provide legal services.

"We're very lucky she has agreed to stay on," Bollinger said.

Barry said she is looking forward to working with Krislov.

Krislov is currently acting as solicitor in the U.S. Department of Labor.

"Marvin is an excellent legal talent," Bollinger said. "People that I spoke to in the process of going through the search said things like, 'He's one of the most intelligent lawyers I've ever worked with,'" Bollinger said.
