Did you know?

Experts say age alone can't explain why 'U' students live differently

In purely mathematical terms, slightly more than 1,000 days (at the most) separate how long a University first-year student and a senior have been alive. Yet one does not have to strain one's eyes too hard to see that there's a mountain of difference between the two.

No R.A. In Sight: Life in residence halls doesn't deter underage drinking

Ask any college student to name some of the activities in which they like to partake for fun around campus, and it's a pretty good bet that drinking will appear on the list. And there's nothing wrong with that ... as long as the drinking is done by responsible adults at least 21 years of age.

Area bars offer a variety of appeals

Picture this: you're a University student and you've just turned the magical 21. You're finally legal ... So what do you do? Most students blessed with conquering this coming of age crisis, reply, without hesitation ... "I'm going to the bar."

Clooney and friends have paid their dues

HOLLYWOOD - George Clooney is one of the biggest names on TV thanks to "ER," but it took him nearly eight years and almost as many series to achieve superstar status. Producers and network executives kept putting him in shows because they knew he had something special. "He was always great," says Peter Golden, senior vice president of talent and casting at CBS, "whether it be in 'Baby Talk' or 'Roseanne.'"

An older, mellower Manson tweaks image

It must not have been easy to be the scourge of the religious right. How else to explain the musical make-over of Marilyn Manson, who with "Mechanical Animals" (Nothing/Interscope) abandons the industrial rock gloom of his notorious "Antichrist Superstar" album for a glam rock sound redolent of the '70s and "Ziggy Stardust"-era David Bowie?

Got a fake ID? Beware: Area stores have seen it all before: Store owners say fake licenses from warmer states are common

If you've got a fake ID chances are it resembles a driver's license from Florida, California, New York or New Jersey. You are also most likely to use it late Friday or Saturday night - especially after a Wolverine football game or just before the hockey team takes the ice.

Bell's: experience great beer from start to finish

"How much do you know about brewing beer?," Bell's Brewer Steve Buszka asks cheerfully enough. But his face darkens a bit for his next and more serious inquiry: "You do drink beer, don't you?" In 1985, Bell's owner Larry Bell, whose home-brewed beer was already making cultured palates water all over the area, opted to try his hand at a little professional brewing. Armed with four employees and small-scale brewing equipment including boilers, storage drums, pressure gauges, bottling equipment and the like, Bell inked a lease to house his operations in a pair of ramshackle Kalamazoo warehouses surrounded by little more than forgotten industrial wasteland.

Students choose java over beer, enjoy the nightlife of local cafes

Coffeehouses and cafes are ubiquitous on campus. Turn down any street, any alley and you will find one nestled among the party stores, surrounded by addled twitchy java-junkies.

Saving super screenplays

This past summer, one amazingly fantastic film hit the local cineplex. "Saving Private Ryan" struck it rich. It hit home. It made individuals of all hormonal balance weep in the middle of the theater. It was easily a masterpiece. No doubt about it.
