Department chair dies at age 53

Renowned Music Prof. William Albright, chair of the school's department of composition, died Thursday evening of liver failure in his Ann Arbor home. He was 53 years old. Named the composer of the year in 1993 by the American Guild of Organists, Albright's accomplishments include numerous compositions and 28 years of teaching at the University.

A sweet new year: Jewish students celebrate new year

Autopsy reports hint at illegal drug use

Preliminary autopsy reports indicate heroin and cocaine were a factor in the death of LSA sophomore Chris Giacherio last Tuesday, Ann Arbor Police Department Lieutenant Jim Tieman said. "The preliminary results are consistent to a drug overdose," Tieman said. The information collected by AAPD in its investigation matches the preliminary tests, Tieman said.

Granger to get plea bargain in rape case

Daniel Granger, the 1998 Grosse Pointe North High School graduate whose admission to the University was suspended following statutory rape allegations, filed a plea bargain Thursday that will put him in jail for 90 to 180 days.

Malaysian leader arrested

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) - Malaysia's sacked deputy prime minister was arrested late yesterday after thousands of his supporters marched to the prime minister's house and demanded the ouster of Asia's longest-serving leader. Hundreds of Anwar Ibrahim's allies shouted angrily, "God is great!" and "Long live Anwar!" shaking their fists as police led him away from the house where he had conducted almost two weeks of protest rallies against the 17-year rule of Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad.

Around the Nation: U.S., Japan to work on defense system

NEW YORK - Concerned about North Korea's ballistic missile development, the United States and Japan agreed yesterday to conduct joint research on a missile defense system that could protect the island nation from attack. "No one should doubt our commitment to defend our interests and to work together for peace and stability in Asia," Defense Secretary William Cohen said at a joint news conference with Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and their Japanese counterparts.

Around the World: Hurricane hits Caribbean islands

ST. JOHN'S, Antigua - Hurricane Georges began lashing the easternmost islands of the Caribbean yesterday, forcing families to huddle in basements and businesses to pile sandbags in front of their entrances. Winds were gusting to 50 mph in Antigua by late afternoon, with forecasters predicting the hurricane's full 130-mph fury by later yesterday evening.

"The Victors!" turns 100 years old

It wasn't written by the King of Pop or the Father of Soul, but after 100 years, it could be called the grandfather of college fight songs. The Michigan fight song, "The Victors!," celebrates 100 years of leading the Wolverines into battle on the field this season.

Restaurants caught not checking I.D.s

The Ann Arbor Police Department ticketed four local restaurants Friday night for not checking age identification before serving alcohol. Managers at Conor O'Neills pub and Shalimar Restaurant said they were part of an alleged undercover operation to catch restaurants selling alcohol to minors. Members of the Ann Arbor Police Department were unable to comment about it.
