Western suspends hockey players, coach

Western Michigan coach Bill Wilkinson was officially placed on temporary suspension yesterday, while university officials conduct an internal investigation of the school's hockey program. Two of Wilkinson's players, sophomores Steven Rymsha and Wilkinson's son, Mark, were suspended indefinitely by Wilkinson after Kalamazoo police arrested the two men Friday night.

No new State News; cows still rule campus

The bars are full, the libraries are empty, there's not a book to be found anywhere and the cows are causing another traffic jam at Grand River and Hagadorn. Yep, it's another Wednesday in East Lansing.

'M' men's golf team 'still testing the waters'

Michigan men's golf coach Jim Carras fine-tuned his lineup this weekend, saying that his team is "still testing the waters" - but it's no surprise who's in the No. 1 position. Junior Mike Harris should once again be Michigan's top gun. Last season, Harris, an all-Big Ten selection and honorable mention all-American, set the Michigan record for scoring average, firing an average score of 72.35.

Louisville men's basketball, women's volleyball slugged by NCAA sanctions

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - The NCAA banned the Louisville men's basketball team from postseason play for one year yesterday and placed the school on three years' probation because of rules violations. The nine violations in the men's basketball and women's volleyball programs involved extra benefits, recruiting, financial aid, institutional control and ethical conduct.

McGwire, Sosa stay in yard; Cubs, Mets tied

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Mark McGwire failed to add to his major league record 65 home runs, yet gave a sellout crowd some drama with two warning-track fly balls in the St. Louis Cardinals' 4-0 victory over the NL Central champion Houston Astros last night.
