Clash of the Titans: Jones goes to limit for defense

When Dhani Jones steps on the field Saturday against Michigan State, he'll know the importance of the game. After all, his education about Michigan State week began long before last Sunday's film session about the Spartans.

Swervin' Irvin won't sneak up again

The ball is pitched to him, standing in the backfield with his hands on his knees. He grabs it and cuts up between right guard and tackle. A couple yards upfield, he suddenly darts to the left. A linebacker closes in - he swings right, quicker than the earth-bound would-be tackler.

Sosa bombs two more

MILWAUKEE (AP) - A day after he conceded the home run race, Sammy Sosa struck back. He hit home runs Nos. 64 and 65 on Wednesday, tying Mark McGwire for the record and breaking an 0-for-21 slump in the Chicago Cubs' 8-7 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers.

Superman or not, Sosa will try to save Cubs

WRIGLEY FIELD - On Sunday, he wasn't Superman. He didn't leap over the Sears Tower in a single bound to 'save the day.' He swung and missed, striking out twice and was 0-for-5. Three times when he was at the plate he had a chance to break the game open and give the Cubs a win with runners on base.

Past behind Colletto;'M's Howard signs

SOUTH BEND (AP) - Notre Dame offensive coordinator Jim Colletto says he's forgotten all about the catcalls thrown his way by Purdue fans after his former team beat up on the Irish last year. Colletto's players haven't.

Soccer faces test at home

As the saying goes, "The third time's the charm." The Michigan women's soccer team is hoping the saying rings true in its third Big Ten game tomorrow, at home against Penn State.

Mets fail to pull ahead of Cubs

NEW YORK (AP) - After the Chicago Cubs dropped the ball, the Mets failed to do anything with it. Given a chance to move one game ahead of Chicago atop the NL wild-card race, the Mets fizzled Wednesday night, getting just three hits in a 3-0 loss to the Montreal Expos.

First weekend of Big Ten play opens with a whimper

The Big Ten has defined the word 'parity' this year. Minnesota and Wisconsin are entrenched at the top of the Big Ten standings, right next to stalwarts Ohio State and Penn State. But if history is to be our guide, the Gophers and Badgers will be gone faster than you can say "Gophers and Badgers are dumb mascots." Incidentally, three of those four teams have the week off, with only Wisconsin, which hosts Northwestern this week, in action.

Mortimer plans for repeat victory

Michigan has been waiting for this weekend all year. The Wolverines been practicing for weeks.

Seattle beckons cross country: McGuire, women's team 'excited' about trip westward

With the weather still warm in this young cross country season and the fifth-ranked Wolverines itching to face some top-flight teams, women's coach Mike McGuire came up with the perfect solution: Take a trip out west. The Wolverines will travel to Seattle for Saturday's Sundodger Invitational.

Bill would impede agent dealings

(U-WIRE) EAST LANSING - Agents who court college athletes may face stricter penalties if a set of bills makes it through the Michigan state Legislature. Legislation slated to be discussed in the House this week would make it a crime for athletic agents to enter on a college or university campus without permission.

Texas falls to middle of nowhere from poll

(U-WIRE) AUSTIN, Texas - It's safe to say that things could be pretty different for the Texas football program right about now. Just three weeks into the season, the Longhorns have plummeted from the lower ranks of the AP poll to the middle of nowhere, thanks to consecutive blowout losses to top-five opponents.
