San Francisco Symphony brings 'Paris' to Ann Arbor

Conductor and pianist Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony will join forces Sunday at Hill Auditorium. The orchestra will perform two George Gershwin pieces, the "Second Rhapsody for Piano and Orchestra" and "An American in Paris," in celebration of the centenary of the beloved American composer's birth on Sept.

British band rocks

England's Morcheeba are among the many bands these days that have managed to incorporate the use of samplers and many other electronic gadgets with a charismatic female lead singer to create its music. But unlike groups such as Garbage and Portishead, which use similar musical devices to create songs of desolation, Morcheeba is out to make smart and uplifting music.

'Chicago' dances into Detroit with luscious ladies and all that jazz

"C'mon babe, why don't we paint the town ... and all that jazz," croons a luscious lady in black as nearly a dozen equally sexy dancers in black writhe and gyrate their way through a jaw-dropping, toe-tapping, hip-shaking opening number.

New cast makes world of difference

At least, Tatoo isn't in it. Barry Sonnenfeld has hit a lot of homers in recent years: "Men in Black," "Get Shorty," and "The Addams Family." But even McGwire and Sosa have to strike out sometime.

Cupid shoots potent load in new ABC sitcom

Against my better judgment of the ludicrous premise that is at the heart of "Cupid," I was smitten as if the diapered god himself had shot me through the heart. "Cupid"'s plot is this: Cupid, a.k.a. Trevor Hale, has been exiled from Mt. Olympus for bad behavior. In order to return home, he must unite no fewer than 100 couples in true love. He must do this sans bow and arrow, i.e. sans magic. Sounds almost as crazy as a teenager who kills vampires in order to save the world, doesn't it?

Sensational Celine goes on with class

One couldn't help but make "Titanic" jokes as Canada's sweetheart, Celine Dion, brought her "Lets Talk About Love" Tour into Detroit on Wednesday night for the second of two concerts. She remarked about her career that she didn't do much this past year, except get on a boat.

Marleys 'Move' 'U' crowd

The reason for the sudden influx of Jamaicans and dread-haired friends on campus this weekend was that Ziggy Marley and The Melody Makers were taking the stage. Although none of the promotional material mentioned Joan Jones, the opening act, she did excite the crowd to hear Ziggy.

'Boy' meets sixth season on ABC

Ben Savage has finally grown up. After following in the footsteps of his older brother Fred, currently on the NBC show "Working," Savage is now 17, and a veteran of television. He first appeared in the ABC miniseries "Wild Palms," created by Oliver Stone, and had a recurring role on the NBC comedy "Dear John.

Olsen twins are double lame fun

Now that you erased "Family Matters," "Step-By-Step" and Sasha Mitchell (star of "Kickboxer" II through IV) from your memory, may you be forewarned. ABC reminds us again to give thanks for Fridays with their new cutesy family sitcom "Full House 2," .
