'M' faces old-time rival
When the talk turns to the Big Game, fans around the state of Michigan split their families.
Wives don't speak to husbands, brothers divide their allegiances and the state's very core splits over the fall Saturday when Michigan plays Michigan State (i.e. tomorrow at 12:10 p.m. at Michigan Stadium.)
Bill aims at punishing sports agents

Some Flint area high school students and parents hoping to join the ranks of the Maize and Blue got a little surprise when they dialed a University of Michigan-Flint information hotline.
A one-digit error in a phone number that was printed in an information packet and distributed to prospective Flint campus students directed them to "a 1-800 gay hotline that was giving out 900 numbers," instead of the University's information hotline, said Donna Ullrich, director of University and alumni relations for the Flint campus.
Thousands evacuate as Georges nears Keys
KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) - Leaving nearly 200 people dead in its wake, Hurricane Georges stormed toward the Florida Keys with gathering speed yesterday, and three-quarters of a million people along the coast were warned to clear out.
Forecasters said Georges would probably slice through the Keys - the curving, whisker-like string of islands off the tip of Florida - with 105 mph winds early Friday and could be up to 125 mph by Sunday in the northern Gulf of Mexico.

WASHINGTON - The number of Americans living in poverty dropped for the third year in a row, led by a decline in black poverty to the lowest level on record, the Census Bureau reported yesterday.
The annual report found income up and poverty down across ages, races and regions last year, as a strong economy pushed American paychecks to levels not seen since before the recession of the early 1990s.

Fraternity adds goodwill to bad-blood game
Tomorrow's gridiron match-up between Michigan and Michigan State may contain some less than gentlemanly conduct, but tonight's Sigma Nu and United Way Football Run may bring some goodwill and charity to the rivalry.
Members of the University's chapter of the Sigma Nu fraternity will drive to East Lansing tonight to meet their brothers from Michigan State University. Joined by sorority women, the students will jog 77 miles back to Ann Arbor to raise money for the United Way.

LANSING (AP) - Michigan's counties have tough, uniform standards to deal with the perpetrators of domestic violence, Gov. John Engler said yesterday.

Stupak won't endorse Fieger
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) - U.S. Rep. Bart Stupak will not endorse fellow Democrat Geoffrey Fieger's candidacy for governor.
