Practice begins today for Michigan hockey

The Michigan hockey team opens official practice today in the same situation as last year - trying to replace graduated, high-scoring seniors with a highly touted freshman recruiting class. Maybe the only difference in 1998 is that the Wolverines have a national championship to defend, which has made Michigan a major bulls eye for every team on its schedule.

Win, tie get 'M' soccer out of Big Ten hole

With two consecutive Big Ten losses fresh in mind, the Michigan soccer team sought and found redemption this weekend after tying No. 7 Penn State and defeating Ohio State 2-0. In their second game of the weekend, the Wolverines (1-2-1 Big Ten, 6-2-1 overall) traveled to Columbus yesterday and shut out the Buckeyes thanks to flawless goalkeeping from senior co-captain Jessica Jones.

A second season is a chance for a team to correct whatever has been troubling it in the beginning of the season and start anew. It's a team's chance to forget the whippings it may have endured and concentrate fresh on the upcoming opponent.

Wanted: team leader for 'M' spikers: Giovanazzi looking for 'that person' to step up, take play to next level

Michigan volleyball coach Greg Giovanazzi issued a challenge to his team Saturday night. The challenge was for a team member to step up and make this her team.

This early in the Michigan cross country season, the question is not "Did Katie McGregor win?" but "By how much?" Saturday in Seattle, the answers for those two questions were "duh" and "a lot." And the Michigan women's team managed to fight off nine other cross country teams at the Sundodger Invitational and took its third meet title this season, defeating second place Washington 31-53.

Pack time costs 'M' harriers in Montana

Until Saturday, the No. 6 Michigan men's cross country team hadn't tested itself, even though the season was approaching its halfway point. The Wolverines' first test of the year came at the Mountain West Classic in Missoula, Mont., where they looked to defend their 1997 team title. Chilly 45-degree temperatures and more than 4,000 feet of elevation provided an unusual, adverse atmosphere for racing.

The stores are out of green, white, maize and blue colored paint. T-shirt vendors are making a killing on profanity laden apparel. Bars are full, libraries are empty and the sheep are safe. Must be a Michigan versus Michigan State weekend.

Driver's pick dooms Purdue, gives Irish comeback victory

SOUTH BEND (AP) - Notre Dame pulled out another amazing comeback under the Golden Dome. Tony Driver, who left school briefly two weeks ago, made two key interceptions in the closing minutes and Jim Sanson kicked a 17-yard field goal with 57 seconds left to give the No. 23 Fighting Irish a 31-30 victory over Purdue.

Defense held strong after break

James Whitley said he was sick of people saying he was part of a "Tin-Man defense" (no heart). DeWayne Patmon said he was annoyed with those who questioned the toughness of Michigan's defenders (Lee Corso, etc.).

The Miami Mouth didn't have much to say after the game. "They outplayed us," Michigan State running back Sedrick Irvin (the aforementioned Mouth) said after his team was beaten by the Wolverines. "You have to give them credit."

Kicker getting the 'Feel' of game

As the final kickoff of the Eastern Michigan game sailed through the uprights last week, Jay Feely must have wondered, 'Where does this leave me?' Freshman kicker Hayden Epstein had just stolen Feely's kickoff duties with seven deep kickoffs.

Michigan the lack of good scores it needed to finish higher. Kyle Kilcherman rounded out the Wolverines' scoring with a 236, tying for 58th place out of 66 golfers.

Field hockey beats up Louisville, 6-1

Respect. The Michigan women's field hockey team now knows what Aretha Franklin was singing about some 30 years ago. Coming off a Big Ten championship last year, and maintaining a No. 8 rank nationally this year, the Wolverines (1-0 Big Ten, 8-2 overall) are finally the team to be feared in the Big Ten.

(AP) - Michael Bishop threw for 441 yards and four touchdowns, including a school-record 97-yarder to Aaron Lockett, as No. 3 Kansas State won its 12th straight over Northeast Louisiana, 62-7. Bishop, who set a school record with 475 yards in total offense, completed 23 of 40 passes and was 48 yards away from Chad May's school record for passing yards in a game when he went to the bench with 11 minutes remaining and Kansas State (4-0) leading 48-7.

College football great Doak Walker passes away at the age of 71

DENVER (AP) - Doak Walker, the 1948 Heisman Trophy winner who starred on two NFL championship teams and was paralyzed in a skiing accident earlier this year, died yesterday at 71. Walker died at Routt Hospital in Steamboat Springs, the ski resort about 100 miles from Denver where he had lived. The hospital said the cause of death was complications from the paralysis, which he had fought with the same determination he showed on the football field.

SAN PEDRO DE MACORIS, Dominican Republic (AP) - Christian Vallenilla picked up a wooden stick, then smacked his third home run of the day in the stadium where Sammy Sosa used to play. "This one's for Sammy," the 11-year-old boy said. Hurricane Georges nearly destroyed the stadium in Sosa's hometown of San Pedro de Macoris.
