Red Berenson and his staff finally hit the ice yesterday, rejoining the defending champs at Yost Arena after a summer of training, skating and celebrating. Following a week of captain's conditioning practice, the Wolverines held their first official workout of the season.

Yes, Aaron Shea is happy that Michigan beat Michigan State on Saturday. Yes, it was a big win, it starts the Big Ten season off on the right foot, it was very exciting, blah, blah, blah.

After completing half of its schedule, the Michigan field hockey team is on top of the polls and still climbing. The eighth-ranked Wolverines are 10 games into their 1998 season, finishing the first half with a record of 8-2.

When last year's Michigan soccer team knocked off Northwestern in the Big Ten tournament championship game, it not only captured Michigan's first ever conference title and NCAA tournament bid, but it also helped propel the program into national spotlight.
Off-season conditioning keeps Wolverines in shape
The Michigan women's golf team's performance this weekend at Lady Northern Intercollegiate Golf tournament in West Lafayette was marked by inconsistency, as it finished 10th in a 14-team field with a score of 1003.
All 11 Big Ten teams participated in this weekend's tournament, giving the Wolverines their first chance to measure themselves against the conference. Michigan State won the tournament with a score of 947, edging out Indiana by four strokes.
Inexperienced 'M' golf struggles at Lady Northern
Success in golf can be achieved by two things - skill and a positive attitude. Without the latter, however, the amount of skill someone has is irrelevant. Once a golfer gets flustered, it is extremely difficult to recover and gain composure and control.

Michigan men's cross country coach Ron Warhurst may end up looking to the sky after this year is over and seeing the stars aligned in the shape of a running shoe - a running shoe with a block 'M' prominently fixed in its corner.
Well, maybe not, but all early signs point to this being a terrific year for the Wolverines. First of all, the 1998 season will be Warhurst's 25th as the Maize and Blue distance mentor. In addition, he finds himself with a group of defending Big Ten championship runners.
