Art museum shows community superb works from globe

The University of Michigan Art Museum contains quite a fine collection - and not just of art. There are a number of curators and committees that go into making the decision of which exhibits should be put on to display. There are three different curators at the museum, in addition to a director, and a committee that approves all final decisions. Carole McNamara is the assistant director for collections and exhibitions. Marshall Wu is in charge of all Asian art exhibits.

Detroit parties provide surreal musical environment

Detroit raves have recently become an adventurous weekend activity for University students seeking something extraordinary. A decade ago these extravagant dance parties began to occur in Detroit on a small scale. Along with the accompanying electronic music culture, popularity has grown year after year.

Techno beats at the heart of Motown's latest sound, culture

Detroit and techno go way back. The eloquent and outlandish rhythms and transcendent themes of techno began in the nearby urban decay of Detroit - thanks to the imaginative use of technology by a small camp of artists of diverse backgrounds.

ATHENS, Ga. - "There must be something in the water." This phrase is often used to explain any sort of profound cultural phenomenon that restricts itself to a specific geographic region. Rather than seeking the deeper truth, the hidden creative stimuli and political mechanisms that motivate artistic expression, people often shrug their shoulders and conclude that "there must be something in the water.

Federation Records drives Detroit hip-hop

It was a long time coming, but the city of Detroit is finally getting recognized as a hip-hop hotspot. Interscope artist Eminem was the first of a trio of major acts to represent "tha D" worldwide. Next to come is Tribe Called Quest-affiliate Slum Village, and Eminem's bad half Royce da 5'9 recently signed a deal with Tommy Boy records.

The extremes: A moral fable

Once upon a time, in a land very much like our own called Asu, there lived a pair of Extremes. These Extremes were brothers, though they wouldn't like to admit it; for you see, these Extremes didn't like each other much. Indeed, each disliked the other so much that they were hard pressed to discover a single issue upon which they could wholly agree: When one remarked that it was a nice sunny day, the other might frown and say that the sun was destroying the crops and opening the door to widespread famine.

Soderbergh's 'Underneath' shows gritty, witty action

"Good luck," says a surly bar bouncer to Michael Chambers (Peter Gallagher) for no perceptible reason, early on in Steven Soderbergh's 1994 thriller "The Underneath." The bouncer could not know how prescient his bit of well-wishing is: Michael is fatefully entering the nightclub owned by his ex-girlfriend's new small-time gangster boyfriend - a club unsubtley called The Ember.

The Honda Civic Si: An affordable burner

Three years I worked with a guy named Julian Turcotte who used to take me for rides in his tweaked 1986 Volkswagen Golf on a weekly basis. We'd scream through Cranbrook's twisty two-lane road in Bloomfield Hills, pushing that little four-pot until we were driving sideways at 65 miles per hour.
