TV: The week that was

What happened on the best shows Wed.-Tues.

"Dawson's Creek": The guys and gals go their separate ways and hash out their angsty conflicts. Pacey's domineering dad takes Dawson, Jack and the Flash along on a father/son fishing trip, and then gets wasted - as all good dads should - remaining completely oblivious to Pacey's intelligence and emotional needs. Back at the ranch, Jen and Mrs. Leery organize a round table interview to get the "teenage girl's" perspective on life. Andie, Joey and Abby join in and resolve issues while snooping through Dawson's personal porno stash.

"90210": Donna and Dylan divinely recover from their respective maladies and the gang holds an intervention to get help for their smack-snorting friend. Kelly has trouble explaining to Matt the nature of her relationship with her sideburned ex. Gina and Kelly nearly throw-down over who should be the one to take care of poor McKay. Donna's career takes off after a hip music star wears the dress she designed at an industry awards show. Just as Matt and Kelly are getting their relationship in order, a small skeleton - in the form of another significant other - pops out of the uber-lawyer's closet. Poor Matt; Tell it to the judge.

"Law and Order": (R) A control-obsessed serial killer who uses his victims for sadomasochistic sexual purposes is finally caught, but without enough evidence to hold him for anything more than assault. Faced with the possibility of his release, McCoy deals him down to 25 to life. But once another person is found out to have committed the crime, Abby threatens to extradite the sadomasochist to Texas where he will face the death penalty. Knowing he's being beaten by a woman, he confesses to one of the other murders to save himself.

"Friends": (R) The week off gives Monica and Chandler a chance to take a break from each other, while Ross is able to put his whining on hiatus.

"ER": (R) Why bother with new episodes when you've got such a wonderfully suspenseful sweeps advertisement campaign? Could it be? Is Dr Ross Leaving The Hospital? Be still, my heart, be still.

"The Simpsons": Rupert Murdoch, Pat Summerall, John Madden, Dolly Parton and Dan Marino lead an all-star cast in a confusing Superbowl adventure. While no actual football or singing was present, the odyssey did begin with a coupon book, came near its conclusion with edible tickets and featured a nice spoof on how long it takes to produce an animated cartoon.

"X Files": Preempted for the Superbowl. As usual, the shadowy Cigarette Smoking Man made sure the Buffalo Bills did not get close to the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

"Ally McBeal": Preempted for the TV Guide Awards. Calista Flockhart called in sick because she needed to eat.

"Buffy The Vampire Slayer": (R) Buffy and Cordelia duke it out for prom queen honors at Sunnydale High, but the real reason to catch this encore is the haunting, dreamlike scene that threatens to take Xander and Willow's best friendship to an entirely new level.

"Felicity": (R) Felicity and Noel get caught up in end-of-term chaos, leaving their make-out-and-flake-out relationship up in the air.
