Buckeyes upset, Notre Dame falls from fourth

Alaska-Fairbanks jumped out to a fast 2-0 start, and used an overtime goal by Daniel Carriere to defeat the Buckeyes in Columbus on Saturday night, 3-2.

Despite being eliminated from postseason contention after Miami's overtime victory over Ferris State, the Nanooks turned in their biggest win of the season in Value City Arena.

Chris Marvel, normally Alaska-Fairbanks' backup goaltender, was the hero, stopping 49 of 51 shots to keep Ohio State at bay.

The Buckeyes had bounced back from the two-goal deficit to tie the game in the second period. After that, neither team scored until Carriere's game-winner with just 1:25 left in overtime.

Bowling Green 5, Notre Dame 1

The usual suspects for Bowling Green were successful on Saturday, as the Falcons came up big on the offensive end to subdue Notre Dame 5-1 in Bowling Green.

Mike Jones had two goals to lead Bowling Green, while Adam Edinger, Dan Price and Chris Bonvie had a goal apiece for the Falcons, who turned a 1-1 tie into a blowout with four unanswered scores.

Bowling Green solidified its playoff standing with the victory, keeping seventh place and a three-point cushion over Miami.

David Inman's unassisted goal in the first period was all Notre Dame could manage against the Falcons. The Fighting Irish have scored just two goals in the past four games, all losses.

Miami 2, Ferris State 1 (OT);

Miami 4, Alaska-Fairbanks 3

The RedHawks needed an overtime goal from Jason Deskins with just 36 seconds remaining in the game to trip up Ferris State at Goggin Ice Arena in Oxford on Saturday night and close out an important four-point weekend.

The victory helped Miami pick up another two points on Lake Superior and Western Michigan. The Lakers lost 4-0 to Northern Michigan while the Broncos were idle. All three teams in contention for the CCHA's final playoff spot and have played an equal number of games.

Deskins was the hero on Friday night also, as the RedHawks defeated Alaska-Fairbanks 4-3. The Nanooks scored three times in the second period, including a goal with just three seconds remaining, to tie the contest at three apiece.

But Deskins' 21st goal of the season, just 2:38 into the final period, provided the margin of victory for Miami. Deskins had two goals in the contest.
