New comedy goes up in smoke

Ben Affleck. Casey Affleck. Janeane Garofalo. Courtney Love. Jay Mohr. Christina Ricci. Paul Rudd. This, boys and girls, is just a sampling of the illustrious cast of "200 Cigarettes," an ensemble film about one wild and crazy night (heard this one before?) that just happens to be New Year's Eve 1981 in New York's already wild and crazy East Village.

Kodo drums up excitement at Power

A Taiko drum heard from a distance was an old Japanese method of establishing a community boundary. This past Tuesday night, the popular Japanese drum troupe, Kodo, pulled Ann Arbor into its community as they performed at the Power Center to a nearly sold-out crowd.

'8 mm' snuffs out Schumacher's career

Joel Schumacher had something to prove with his latest film, "8mm." And he proved it, all right - the man who made the "it only cost $100 million, I swear!" box office bomb "Batman and Robin" proves once and for all that he should never again be given a budget over $40 million.

Blair shows her real intentions

1995 University graduate Selma Blair wants to set the record straight. Rumor has it that she "will cook anything made with cheese" but Blair admits, "That is just a fallacy." "It makes me sound like I'm inventing new ways to put fromage in my food," she said, "I mean, I really hate cheese, to tell you the truth. I get bloated and I get a lot of phlegm and I don't eat cheese."

Recent grad garners award

From New York, to Ann Arbor and back to the Big Apple, Sam Davis has gained his way as a young composer. The 1998 University graduate has recently been recognized by the Jonathan Larson Performing Arts Foundation for his musical composition.

Live televised special to excavate Egyptian pyramid

Did you really think that the pyramids of Egypt were old news? Fox network wants to try to prove it is not, when it takes its television audience live to the blistering desert of the eastern Sahara to present "Opening the Lost Tombs: Live from Egypt.

Alice chases rabbit again on NBC

In attempting to bring Lewis Carroll's "Alice and Wonderland" to life with a live action miniseries, NBC's resulting product is a mirage of special effects, big name actors and a large, white rabbit on steroids. The spectacular eye candy provides for an entertaining miniseries, however, "Alice" tends to drag through three long hours.
