Wisconsin bucks Purdue; Ohio State sits alone atop conference

MADISON (AP) - Sean Mason scored 25 points to lead No. 24 Wisconsin to a 61-56 win over No. 9 Purdue yesterday, the Badgers' second victory over a Top 25 team in less than a week.

Mason scored 13 of the Badgers' last 19 points, including two free throws that gave them a 57-50 lead.

The Boilermakers (1-1 Big Ten, 13-3 overall) rallied with a basket by Mike Robinson and a 3-pointer by Jaraan Cornell to pull within 57-55 with one minute remaining.

Charlie Wills then hit a jumper from the corner to put Wisconsin up 59-55. After Cornell hit one of two free throws, Ty Calderwood put the game away with two free throws.

Wisconsin (2-2, 14-3) got 11 points each from Calderwood and Mark Vershaw. Last Wednesday, the Badgers beat No. 12 Michigan State 66-51 to break a two-game Big Ten losing streak.

Ohio State stayed perfect in conference play by downing Indiana 73-56 in Columbus on Saturday night. Indiana dropped to 1-3 in the conference.
Brian Cardinal scored 13 points to lead Purdue. Greg McQuay added 12 and Jaraan Cornell 11 points.

Ohio State 73, Indiana 56: Jon Sanderson scored six points in a 9-0 run to start the second half and 13th-ranked Indiana never recovered as Ohio State stayed perfect at home with a 73-56 victory Saturday night.

It was the most lopsided Ohio State victory over the Hoosiers during coach Bob Knight's 28 seasons. Knight had never before lost to his alma mater by more than nine points.

The Buckeyes (3-0 Big Ten, 13-3 overall) improved to 9-0 in their new home, Value City Arena. Ohio State was 8-22 overall last season - losing three times to the Hoosiers - and 0-8 in the Big Ten at St. John Arena.

Northwestern 59, Illinois 46: Evan Eschmeyer had 17 rebounds and 16 points to lead Northwestern over Illinois 59-46 Saturday.

Illini freshman Cory Bradford led all scorers with 22 points on 8-18 shooting.

The Wildcats (2-1, 9-3) held the Illini (0-3, 8-7) to 28 percent shooting and outrebounded them 42-33.

Northwestern jumped out to a 25-7 lead midway through the first half and finished the half up 33-18, with Illinois shooting just 7-of-31 from the floor.

Illinois cut the lead to 10 with just under 10 minutes to play, but Northwestern countered with a 3-pointer from Tavaras Hardy.

Illinois closed the gap to 49-41 with six minutes to play before Eschmeyer scored and was fouled. With 3:07 left, Northwestern led 54-41 after free throws by Eschmeyer and Julian Bonner and 57-41 before a Bradford 3-pointer.

Minnesota 75, Penn State 60: Quincy Lewis scored 24 points and Joel Przybilla added a career-high 17, leading No. 16 Minnesota to a 75-60 victory over Penn State (1-3, 9-5) on Saturday night.

Lewis, the Big Ten's leading scorer with a 22-point average, was 9-for-14 from the floor as Minnesota (1-1, 10-2) rebounded from an unexpected three-point loss to unranked Northwestern on Wednesday night.

Lewis has been in double figures in 17 straight games and has 20 or more points in 10 of those games.

Przybilla, the Gophers' highly-recruited 7-foot-1 freshman, added 13 rebounds and six blocked shots to hold his own against Calvin Booth, the conference's top rebounder.
