Spartans canned: Women reopen pool with victory

Last night, the Michigan women's swimming team capped off its Big Ten dual-meet season with a 162-144 victory over Michigan State in the newly renovated Canham Natatorium. The victory was the Wolverines' first since they defeated Purdue on Jan. 15.

Canham now 'cathedral' of NCAA

There was excitement in the air last night at the newly restored Don Canham Natatorium - and not just because the air was clean. The Michigan women's swimming and diving team christened the renovated pool with a victory over Michigan State, adding to an already jubilant evening in which the team returned to the natatorium after a nine-month layoff from the building due to repairs.

ACL injury benches freshman for season as team prepares for Big Ten Championships

Michigan freshman Jason Mallory, who is still wet behind the ears when it comes to collegiate swimming, will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury. "Jason can't be replaced," Michigan men's swimming coach Jon Urbanchek said. "He's our most valuable swimmer as far as total points in the Big Ten championship."

Dread Pirate Vignier? Not so inconceivable

Like the Fire Swamp in the movie "The Princess Bride," the low post in Big Ten basketball is a place fraught with peril. Deadly elbows, fiery personalities and Students Of Unusual Size threaten all who dare enter. The meek might inherit the earth, but the low post is best left to those brash enough to laugh out loud in the face of danger.

Women favored to win weekend invite

Typically, when a team has to play without two All-Americans, it is worried about the outcome of the upcoming event. But that is not the case with the Michigan women's track and field team. The Wolverines will go to the Michigan Intercollegiate without seniors Nicole Forrester and Katie McGregor.

Intrastate war brings out emotion, intensity

Hockey at Michigan is big. There is no question about it. How else can you explain the 6,000-plus crazies that fill Yost Ice Arena on Friday and Saturday night, yelling their lungs out as the Wolverines battle the opposition?

Sports that include racing in one form or another are the closest thing to scripted drama in the athletic world. Coaches use this to their advantage to see where swimmers should race in order to give their team the best chance to win.

This year's crop of football blue-chippers brings about expected hoopla

Right now, Section 29, Row 42, Seat 11 is blanketed in a layer of white. So is the rest of Michigan Stadium, for that matter, but my main concern lies with that painted number on that seat and the one to its left.

New rankings stick 'M' at No. 6

After it seemed like it might only be a bad dream, the Michigan women's gymnastics team soon realized its early season loss to Minnesota, by the tiniest of margins (193.050-193.550), was enough to awaken the beast - also known as the NCAA ranking system.

Spartans squeak by Ohio State:
Michigan State now in driver's seat atop conference standings

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan State coach Tom Izzo didn't have to say a word to get point guard Mateen Cleaves' attention at halftime of yesterday's game with Ohio State. "He got in a few guys' faces at halftime, but he gave me that stare," said Cleaves, who scored 10 of his team-high 16 points in the final 2:09 in lifting the eight-ranked Spartans to a 76-71 victory over 15th-ranked Ohio State.

Three Wolverines seeking 10th win against Hokies and Cavaliers

This weekend the Michigan men's tennis team faces a big challenge when it travels to Charlottesville, Va., to play two pivotal early season matches against Virginia Tech and Virginia. "If we go down to Virginia, play hard, and return to Ann Arbor victorious, it will give us a great deal of momentum going into our upcoming matches," freshman Ben Cox said.

Iowa holds off Penn State rally

IOWA CITY (AP) - For the second straight game, Iowa got burned from the perimeter. This time, though, the 16th-ranked Hawkeyes escaped. Dean Oliver scored 17 points and Iowa overcame the hot shooting of Joe Crispin to defeat Penn State 84-74 yesterday, halting a three-game losing streak.
