Lawmakers push control of GHB

Known by such names as "liquid ecstasy," "lemons" and "easy lay," the drug gamma hydroxybutyrate has been implicated in at least five Michigan deaths - including that of LSA first-year student Courtney Cantor five months ago. Now the dangers of GHB have attracted national attention, and several lawmakers are pushing to control its use.

Blue party announces election platform

Members of the newly-formed Blue Party want student voters to "go blue" in next week's Michigan Student Assembly elections because of the party's fourteen-point platform and its philosophy on accomplishing tasks.

Holocaust conference to educate participants

For its 20th year, Hillel's Annual Conference on the Holocaust will bring two weeks of lectures and other activities to the campus community to educate people about one of the most tragic events in history. The conference, which LSA senior and publicity Chair Cara Hecker called "one of the largest programs of its kind in the country," is completely student-run, although she said Hillel's staff provided help and support.

On the farm: 'U' regent takes Domino's post

In a brand new office in a familiar city, University Regent David Brandon (R-Ann Arbor) began his new job today as chief executive officer of Domino's Pizza Inc. "I think Domino's is a great company," Brandon said. "It's a leadership company with a strong brand name ... a lot of opportunity for continued growth and opportunity in the future."

Academic freedom addressed

Many students don't stop to think about who writes their textbooks. That labor unions, big businesses and private money may play a part in this and other aspects of University life has implications that some may see as a threat to academic freedom.

MSU greeks meet to plan vote

Michigan State University's Interfraternity Council and Panhellinic Association will vote on whether to prohibit alcohol at chapter houses later this week. The organizations' executive boards planned to meet last night to decide when the vote on the alcohol ban will take place.

Appeal not likely to delay murder trial

DETROIT (AP) - A last-minute appeal filed by Jack Kevorkian likely will not delay the start of his trial on a first-degree murder charge, area lawyers said. Kevorkian filed the emergency appeal Friday with the Michigan Court of Appeals, asking for a dismissal of a first-degree murder count. The appeal came just hours after prosecutors dropped the assisted suicide charge against him in the Sept. 17 death of Thomas Youk.
