Away from home, 'M' has harder path

Last year at this time, the Michigan hockey team notched a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament and received the luxury of playing the West Regional in the warm confines of Yost Ice Arena - something they won't have this season. Home sweet home turned out to be an understatement.

Baseball braves cold, lights fire against Western

KALAMAZOO - Braving freezing temperatures and a tundra-like field, the Michigan baseball team built a fire under its hitters that fueled three multiple-run innings for the Wolverines en route to a 9-5 victory over Western Michigan. Heading into the eighth inning, the Wolverines (8-10) led 7-2 and looked to be cruising to an easy victory. But a three run eighth for Western, thanks to an RBI triple by right-fielder Kris Gundrum and a two-run homer by left-fielder John Toner, brought t he Broncos within two going into the final inning.

Men look to challenge for titles

Beginning today, the Michigan men's swimming and diving team - one of the most illustrious programs in NCAA history - will be at looking to challenge for a national title at the 76th NCAA championships in Indianapolis. The Wolverines have won an NCAA- record 11 national titles in swimming, not including the seven Michigan won before swimming officially became an NCAA sanctioned event in 1937.

NCAA takes it easy on Wisconsin

MADISON (AP) - The two-year probation Wisconsin received for unauthorized spending of booster club money mostly embarrasses the school, a top NCAA investigator said yesterday. "The penalties are quite light for a major violation," said David Swank, chair of the NCAA's Division I Committee on Infractions. "The university did not properly oversee what its booster clubs were doing."

Best of the best compete in Iowa

This weekend, the Michigan men's gymnastics team makes the trek to Iowa to compete for the title of Big Ten champions. The meet will take place tomorrow through Saturday in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The Big Ten Championships could be the most exciting meet of the gymnastics season. The honor of winning the Big Ten title may not seem to be the most prestigious award in the country, but this year it is.

Postseason begins for'M' women gymnasts

It's a brand new season. And with that knowledge, the Michigan women's gymnastics team will travel to Michigan State on Saturday to compete in the Big Ten Championships. This will be the first of three post-season meets for the Wolverines that could culminate in the NCAA Champion ships in Salt Lake City on April 22-24.

This weekend marks the beginning of the end of an era in Michigan men's track and field. The Wolverines head to the Castillo Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. tomorrow and Saturday to jump start their outdoor season.

KALAMAZOO - The biggest question facing the Michigan baseball team heading into this season was the pitching. But now, 18 games into the 1999 season, Michigan coach Geoff Zahn and his Wolverines (8-10 overall) aren't too worried. "I was unsure of our pitching at the beginning of the season, Zahn said. "But I think our pitching has been pretty good so far."

The Michigan men's tennis team opens up its Big Ten dual-match season this weekend with two road matches against Iowa and Wisconsin. Michigan will begin the conference season firing on all cylinders.

Tanglewood could be just what the Dr. ordered for men's golf

After a two-week hiatus, the Michigan men's golf team returns to action this weekend at the Dr. Pepper Tanglewood Intercollegiate in Pottsboro, Texas. This will be the first meet for the Wolverines since the Miami (Ohio) Invitational in Ocala, Fla. on Mar. 13-14. This tournament's field will include some of the nation's elite programs and every Big Ten school but Ohio State.

Non-conference foes mean more 'M' woes

The non-conference woes continued for the 3-8 Michigan women's tennis team yesterday as they fell to No. 14 Notre Dame, 9-0. The three top players for the Irish set the tone by defeating Michigan's three upperclassmen. Michigan junior Danielle Lund fell to No. 11 Michelle Dasso, 6-2, 6-4. Junior Brook Hart lost to two time All-American Jennifer Hall, 6-1, 6-4. Senior Jen Boylen fought hard, but was beaten by No.
