Hobey Baker to be awarded today; Comrie a longshot

Michigan's Mike Comrie, who led the Wolverines in points in his first two seasons, will most likely not win the Hobey Baker Award - given to college hockey's most valuable player.

The award, which will be announced at 4 p.m., today, in Providence at the Frozen Four, was won by Michigan's Brendan Morrison in 1997.

Comrie, just a sophomore, still has two more chances to win the award. Seniors have predominantly won the award in its 19-year history.

Comrie was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the third round (91st overall) in the 1999 draft.

On Wednesday, the speedy center told The Michigan Daily that he plans to return for his junior season.

Michigan officials said yesterday that Comrie will not travel to Providence for the ceremony. Rensselaer goaltender Joel Laing and Wisconsin forward Steve Reinprecht are the current favorites.
