Shooter pleads guilty

Zachary Marwil, an LSA sophomore, pleaded guilty yesterday to shooting a fraternity pledge with a BB gun in December.

While in Circuit Court Judge Ann Mattson's court today, Marwil reversed his previous plea of innocence, admitting to one count of illegal discharge of a firearm without malicious intent - a misdemeanor.

Marwil had been accused of shooting a pledge of Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity, where he is an active member, in the groin during an alleged hazing incident.

Fraternity members told Ann Arbor Police officers they thought the gun was not loaded as Marwil allegedly pulled the trigger six times before it went off.

The fraternity was suspended by its national chapter shortly after the incident.

All members moved out of the house after it was vandalized shortly before winter break.

Interfraternity Council Adviser John Mountz said last week that the fate of AEPi is still being decided by a review board of national chapter members, who are determining whether there is enough interest in the organization to keep a chapter on campus.

Marwil, a native of Rhode Island, had no statement regarding the shooting or the plea.

"The Marwil family views this as a horrible accident," Marwil's lawyer, Peter Kelly said.

Marwil faces a maximum sentence of one year in prison and a $500 fine.

A sentencing date has not yet been scheduled but is expected in the next month.

Marwil is also being investigated under the University's Code of Student Conduct, but it is unclear where that investigation stands.

The pledge's family declined to comment on Marwil's plea or the situation in general.
