AEPi nationals to determine fate of campus chapter todayBy Caitlin Nish Daily Staff Reporter After being officially suspended in December when a fraternity pledge was injured in an alleged hazing incident, the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity's national chapter is expected to release a statement today revealing the status of their investigation into the campus chapter. "The AEPi chapter is now under membership review, meaning that a supervising body consisting of members belonging to or appointed by the headquarters is evaluating the future status of each individual member," Vice President for External Affairs for the Interfraternity Council Jerry Mangona said in a written statement. The national organization could not be reached for comment. The review commenced when a fraternity pledge, a 19-year-old LSA freshman, was shot in the groin at close range with a BB gun during an alleged hazing incident. Suspended immediately after the incident, fraternity members soon moved out of the fraternity's house, Mangona said. He added that members had already vacated the house when it was vandalized shortly before winter break. Zachary Marwil, the LSA sophomore responsible for discharging the gun, pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count of illegal discharge of a firearm without malicious intent. A misdemeanor, Marwil faces a maximum sentence of one year in prison and a $500 fine. Marwil's sentencing date has not yet been scheduled, but is expected to be sometime next month. In addition to criminal prosecution, Marwil is being investigated under the University's Code of Student Conduct. But the progress of this investigation is still unclear. The statement to be released today by AEPi's national organization is expected to state whether the national organization will be closing the campus chapter. "The Office of Greek Life can neither confirm or deny the dissolution of AEPi's chapter at the U of M," Mangona said. Neither IFC Adviser John Mountz nor AEPi President Brad Lundy could be reached for comment.
