Buckeyes hold steady in Big Ten's top spot

COLUMBUS - Michael Redd scored six points in a late 13-2 run - and both teams had to wait out the officials - as No. 8 Ohio State beat Purdue 68-59 Saturday night to retain its spot at the top of the Big Ten standings.

With the Buckeyes on top 48-46 with 8:41 left, Redd, who finished with 14 points, hit a shot from the lane.

After Scoonie Penn, who led Ohio State with 19 points, hit a foul shot, Redd scored inside and then hit a fastbreak layup off an alley-oop from Penn.

Penn then added a layup of his own before George Reese and Ken Johnson scored on rebound follows to put Ohio State ahead 61-48.

The lead never dropped below seven points again.

The win was the sixth in a row for Ohio State, which has won 10 of its last 11.

Play was stopped for 10 minutes in the second half while the officiating crew watched a video replay to determine if it had made the correct call on the previous play.

Connecticut 66, Seton Hall 56: Khalid El-Amin showed no ill effects from a thigh injury and scored 16 points to lead No. 6 Connecticut to a 66-56 win over Seton Hall on Sunday.

El-Amin sustained a deep thigh bruise three days earlier in the win against Providence and had only practiced lightly since.

The junior point guard scored 11 points in the first half.

Seton Hall kept it close behind the 3-point shooting of sophomore guard Darius Lane and post defense of 6-11 freshman center Samuel Dalembert.

Lane was 5-of-5 from 3-point range in the opening period.

After UConn began the game with baskets by Edmund Saunders and Jake Voskuhl, Lane went to work from long range.

He scored 11 points in the Pirates' 16-4 run over a four-minute span to stake Seton Hall to a 16-13 lead.

Dalembert had five blocks in the first half, two more than the entire UConn squad in the period.
