Michigan gymnasts sign three recruits

Michigan women's gymnastics coach Bev Plocki announced yesterday she had signed three highly regarded recruits for the 2001-02 season.

Chelsea Kroll (Wexford, Pa.), Lauren Mirkovich (Bulringame, Calf.) and Kallie Steffes (Naperville, Ill.) will join the squad that finished sixth this past season at NCAA nationals.

Pittenger earns Big Ten merit

Michigan outside hitter Alija Pittenger earned Big Ten Conference co-Player of the Week honors yesterday after leading Michigan to victories over No. 13 Ohio State and No. 25 Michigan State.

She shared the award with Nicole Branagh of Minnesota.

Pittenger, who recorded the first triple-double of her career against Michigan State, leads the Big Ten in digs, averaging 3.91 per game.
