Women's hockey sweeps pair from Lakers

Playing for pride, respect and a handful of fans, the Michigan women's hockey club extended its unbeaten streak this weekend, winning a pair of games against Lake Superior State, 4-1 on Friday and 5-2 on Saturday.

The newest members of the team dominated scoring in Saturday's victory, which the Lakers forfeited once they fell behind 5-2.

The team's lone freshman, Jackie Neal and Julia Reed, made their mark, combining to score three of Michigan's five goals.

Michigan's goalie tandem, consisting of senior Dana Aronson and junior Christine Granger, has allowed a mere two goals in the team's first four games of the season, including back-to-back shutout victories against Buffalo.

While it considers every game important, the team has one ultimate goal in mind: repeating last year's CCWHA league championship.

"It's our number one goal," forward Jodi Berris said. "We really want to win again."

Team captain Tory Deleeuw believes that Michigan has a decent chance of retaining its conference title.

"We have a strong team this year," she said.

In its next game, the women's hockey club battles Bowling Green on Friday at 10 p.m.

All home games are played at Yost Arena, and admission is free of charge.
