Weezer sneaks into Detroit for a show; chats about future plans

DETROIT - When Weezer played at St. Andrew's Hall Saturday night, it was part of a tour so underpublicized that neither the venue's website or www.pollstar.com had confirmed the concert before tickets sold out. But if the show came as a surprise to fans, it was almost as much as a surprise to band members.

Coyotes anything but ugly; movie foul

How ugly is ugly? "Coyote Ugly" which refers to waking up in bed with your arm around someone so unattractive that you gnaw the arm off and bolt before they wake up and recognize you. A long running time is nothing to be afraid of, in fact it is to be celebrated that such a young and talented filmmaker as Paul Thomas Anderson was given all the authority in the world to make and release his movie the way that he wanted to, critics and naysayers be damned. So what if watching the movie takes an extra hour out of your life? It only makes the payoff that much sweeter and powerful when it comes. "Magnolia" is not a film to be consumed in bits and pieces (notice only 12 chapters spread out over the course of the DVD), but rather a film to be swallowed whole in a fearless flurry and then processed and digested for days to come.

Cell locks down viewers; tosses out the key

Serial killers tend to be one of the more popular subjects for movies and lately the majority of the films about this topic have been nothing short of atrocious. The setup is often the same - see a victim die, see the police worry, see the killer capture another victim, see the killer torture the victim, play cat and mouse for 90 minutes and bada-bing you've got a movie. "The Cell" makes little exception to this formula, with its twist being that psychotherapist Catharine Deane (Jennifer Lopez) enters the killer's mind through some virtual-reality type machine to find the location of the latest victim, who just maybe - is still alive.
