The Editor’s Page — A look behind the scenes.

Daily Editor in Chief

Trustworthiness — that’s the quality that separates newspapers from the rest of the crowded online media world. In tough times, it has also become one of newspapers’ biggest selling points and one of their best ways to differentiate themselves. Much of that trust, though, is built on newspapers’ emphasis on accuracy, truth, and ethics — three goals that newspapers achieve through internal decision-making processes about which most readers know little.
That lack of reader insight has started to change. As newspapers make their case for survival, they’ve made accountability — the same accountability they so often demand of governments — a centerpiece of their case. With features like The New York Times’s “Ask the Newsroom,” some newspapers have cracked open their doors to give readers a glimpse of how decisions are made inside.
The Michigan Daily’s newly re-invigorated blog, “The Editor’s Page,” is our take on this. Each day, a Daily editor posts something about the Daily’s internal functions that may be of interest to readers. Sometimes, editors post about how important editorial decisions were made. Other times, they post about mistakes we’ve made, day-to-day concerns, and the changes being made to michigandaily.com as the Daily’s Internet presence grows. And in traditional Daily style, editors have a little fun, too.
“The Editor’s Page” is our attempt at accountability. It’s a way to make what was usually a one-sided conversation, a two-sided conversation.
