Alumni Talk with Geoff Larcom

Geoff Larcom, executive director of media relations at Eastern Michigan University, is a veteran Ann Arbor journalist with 26 years experience working as an editor and reporter for print and online newspapers, including The Detroit News and The Ann Arbor News. After 12 years as sports editor at The Ann Arbor News, he covered higher education from 2000 to its print edition closure in July of 2009. He also served as a columnist for Ann Arbor dot.com before becoming director of media relations at EMU in September of 2009.

In 2008-09, Larcom completed a Knight-Wallace Journalism Fellowship at the University of Michigan. He was one of 20 journalists from around the world selected for the mid-career program that involves a year of academic study and travel. Larcom studied the psychology of leadership and Spanish and traveled to Argentina, Russia and Israel during his year at U-M.

Larcom has a master's degree in journalism and a bachelor's degree in political science from U-M, where he served as sports editor of The Michigan Daily after three years as a sports reporter there. He lives in Ann Arbor with his wife, Kristen, and has two adult sons who graduated from Michigan State. City Hall is named after his father, Guy, who served as Ann Arbor's first city administrator, from 1956-1973.
