Student Publications Scholarships:

Wendy Owen Memorial Award

This fund supports an award ranging from $800 to $4,000 per year to a Daily editorial staff member who is a junior, sophomore, or freshman and whose contributions to the University community through the Daily have been soundly constructive. Students with financial need receive preference. This fund was established in 1952 in memory of Wendy Owen, a Daily staff member from 1949 to 1951.

Peterson-Fineberg Scholarship

This fund supports a scholarship for one or more students who have performed meritoriously during the academic year and demonstrate financial need. The projected earnings of the fund determine the amount of the scholarship. The fund was established in honor of Carl Peterson and Mel Fineberg, Managing Editor and Sports Editor respectively of The Michigan Daily in 1939-40, who were killed in World War II. The fund was initiated by members of their families, their colleagues and others interested in recognizing the high quality of work at The Michigan Daily.

Ken Fink Award

The Ken Fink Award Fund supports an annual prize of at least $600 to a staff photographer who demonstrates creativity, humor, spontaneity, originality and technical mastery. The fund was established as a memorial to Ken Fink, a Daily photographer, Photo Editor and Arts & Food Editor from 1972 through 1977 by a group of his college newspaper friends in 1999.

Ray O’Hara Sports Writing Award

The Ray O’Hara Sports Writing Award Fund supports an annual prize of at least $500 to a sports writer at the Daily who creates “an article or series of articles that exhibit a perspective that respects the unique role of the Daily as the ‘students’ newspaper’, the significance of athletics to the University, and the relationships among the student athlete, the University and the student body. The article should also illustrate an investigative journalistic style that exhibits candor, a search for truth and a sense of humor, yet honors the highest ethics and principles of journalism.” This fund was established in 1998 in memory of Ray O’Hara, a sports writer for the Daily in the mid-1970’s who maintained a lifelong love for The University of Michigan and its athletics.

Chris Parks Award

The Chris Parks Michigan Daily Journalism Award Fund supports a prize of at least $500 to a member of The Michigan Daily editorial staff who exemplifies the outstanding journalistic characteristics exemplified by Chris Parks – a sharp eye for a story combined with tremendous personal integrity and a sense of humor. This award is granted only when the selection committee believes that a candidate truly merits these characteristics. This fund was established in 2004 in memory of Christopher Parks, an editorial staff member of The Michigan Daily and Editor in 1973-74.
