2008-2009 The Michigan Daily Scholarships and Awards
There are seven scholarships or awards available to staff members of The Michigan Daily:
The Gottesman Scholarship
- Established by Harold and Barbara Gottesman to establish a permanent scholarship for Daily editorial staff members who have a need for financial assistance.
- $2,000/year
- Freshman or Sophomore editorial staff member
- Based on need and merit
- Essay on why the applicant believes it is important to work for the Daily.

Wendy Owen Memorial Award
- Established in memory of Wendy Owen, a Daily staff member from 1949 to 1951
- $800 - $4,000 per year depending on available funds
- Junior or less editorial staff member
- Student whose contributions to the University community through the Daily have been soundly constructive
- Preference to students with financial need

Peterson-Fineberg Scholarship
- Established in honor of Carl Peterson and Mel Fineberg, Managing Editor and Sports Editor, respectively, of the Daily in 1939-40 who were killed in World War II
- $2,000 - $5,000 per year depending on available funds
- Sophomore, Junior or Senior staff member who has performed their duties meritoriously
- Priority given to students with financial need
- Business staff members are eligible for this scholarship

Ray O’Hara Sports Writing Award
- Established in memory of Ray O’Hara, a sports writer for the Daily in the mid-1970’s
- $450 - $500 per year depending on available funds
- Any Michigan Daily sports staff member
- Based on an article or series of articles that exhibit a perspective that respects the unique role of The Michigan Daily as the students’ newspaper, the significance of athletes to the University of Michigan, and the relationships among the student athlete, the University and the student body.
- The writer should show an investigative journalistic style that exhibits candor, a search for the truth and a sense of humor, yet honors the highest ethics and principles of journalism.

Ken Fink Award
- Established in memory of Ken Fink, Daily Chief Photographer in 1975-76
- $1,000 per year
- Any Michigan Daily student photographer (non-senior or non-incoming senior) in good standing at the Daily and the University of Michigan.
- Each photographer may submit up to three photos or photo stories taken for the Daily during the past year.
- The selection will be based on creativity, humor, spontaneity, originality and technical mastery.
- Selection made by Scholarship Committee of the Board in consultation with Alyce Haas, Steve Kagan and Susan Zucker.

Class of 1998 Scholarship
- Established by four alumni of The Michigan Daily, Nicholas Cotsonika, Alan Goldenbach, Joshua Rich and Josh White, who graduated in 1998.
- A reporter or editor in good standing of The Michigan Daily.
- Demonstrated financial need as determined by the Office of Financial Aid.
- Preference given to a student with a demonstrated interest in journalism or mass communications.
- The General Manager of Student Publications, in consultation with the Board and the Office of Financial Aid shall select a group of candidates who meet the criteria, from which the Board will make the final decision.
- Each annual scholarship should approximate $5,000.

Stanford Lipsey Endowed Scholarships
There may be up to six scholarships available to all publication staff members.
- Established by Stan Lipsey, a Daily and Michiganensian alumnus of 1948.
- An undergraduate student working on any of the publications administered by the Office of Student Publications.
- Demonstrated financial need as determined by the Office of Financial Aid.
- If there are multiple candidates meeting the financial need and student publications’ criteria, a preference will be given to students with a demonstrated interest in a career in journalism or mass communications.
- Scholarships are renewable each year, provided the scholarship recipients continue to have financial need and are involved in one or more of the publications.
- Once the endowment generates its full distribution, it is intended that the revenue generate six $5,000 scholarships.
- The General Manager of Student Publications, in consultation with the Scholarship Committee of the Board for Student Publications and in coordination with the Office of Financial Aid shall select the scholarship awardees.
